Five Common Scams:  Don’t Become a Victim!

Now that we’re well into the New Year, we thought it prudent to remind you that scammers are still out there and are constantly busy trying to steal money from a whole new set of victims. Don’t be one of them!!  So with that in mind, we are sharing a list of five of the most common scams, as determined by the Better Business Bureau.

1. IRS SCAMS
Phony IRS calls have declined slightly since September, but the BBB anticipates calls will increase again, ahead of tax season. Frequently, con artists will pose as IRS employees and threaten victims with prosecution if they fail to wire money.

2. DEBT COLLECTION SCAMS
Debt collection scams remained a mainstay among scammers in 2016, and experts believe they will continue into 2017. Like IRS scammers, fake debt collectors call consumers and demand payment, often in a threatening manner.

3. LOTTERY, SWEEPSTAKES AND GIFT SCAMS
Despite increased awareness, thousands of victims continue to fall for lottery and sweepstakes scams each year. Often, scammers will tell victims they won money and ask them to wire the taxes in return.

4. EMPLOYMENT SCAMS
Despite improving employment rates in 2016, employment scams still made the top five list because many consumers remain underemployed and are seeking part-time jobs. Scammers prey on that economic hardship, offering victims work as secret shoppers or promoters who agree to wrap their vehicles with advertising logos for a third party. In the case of the vehicle wrap technique, the con artists often send fake checks for $1000 and demand $300 back to pay for the wrapping. Soon after, the check will bounce and the victim will have lost $300 to the scammer.

5. ONLINE PURCHASE SCAMS
Rounding out the top five list, scammers frequently sell fake merchandise online and pocket the money. If you are buying something online, make sure to use reputable websites and always look for the "https" at the start of the web address in your browser.

According to Adam Price, the Regional Director at the Better Business Bureau, these scams only continue because they are working. In fact, the BBB estimates nearly one in five people lose money to a scam each year with annual losses of approximately $50 billion.

Fans Rejoice with Football, Food and Fun!
In less than 36 hours, this Sunday, an estimated 188.5 million folks will tune in to the biggest football game of the year.  And whether you’re a fan of the game, the teams, the half-time show, or the commercials, one thing is certain we’ve all become fans of the food.

According to Hallmark Cards, the Big Game now represents the Number 1 at-home party event of the year, surpassing the number of parties ringing in the New Year.  With more than 55 million dollars expected to be spent on food alone, after Thanksgiving, this weekend’s game is second in the amount of food consumed.  And while turkeys are the main event for November, chicken wings are the go-to bites for February.  The National Chicken Council estimates that 1.33 billion chicken wings will be nibbled and gnawed this Sunday alone.

And for those fans looking for a little less finger-licking mess, the Snack Food Association states that over 20 million pounds of chips will be dunked into 21 million dollars’ worth of refrigerated dips.  Wowzer!!

Still looking for game-worthy snacks to make for this year’s celebration?  Home Life Concierge is pleased to share a family-favorite recipe that combines savory chicken with a zippy cheese base.  Try it – you won’t be disappointed!

5 Tips to Keeping Your Fridge Cool, Clean and Clutter-Free

Home Life Concierge - January 13, 2017

5 Tips to Keeping Your Fridge Cool, Clean and Clutter-Free
The holidays have passed and with the New Year here, January is the perfect month to get your refrigerator cleaned-out and organized.  After all, the doors of this family-favorite appliance are opened on average 22 times per day leaving you without the excuse “out of sight, out of mind” in your quest to find reason to postpone the doing of this unenviable task.

So roll up your sleeves, open that fridge and let’s get started.  This shouldn’t take long!

Tip #1:  Keep It Clean
  • Take out ALL the food from your fridge.
  • Remove the drawers and shelves and place them in your sink filled with warm water and dishwashing soap.  Soak, wipe and rinse.
  • Use warm water and dishwashing soap and wipe out the inside of the fridge.
  • DO NOT USE KITCHEN CLEANING PRODUCTS WITH CHEMICALS OR DISINFECTANTS!
  • If you can’t scrub up some spills, mix a bit of baking soda with a little water to make a paste.  Apply the paste to the stain and leave for an hour, then wipe up with a damp sponge.  Ta-Da, stain is gone!
  • To combat odors, make sure to place an open box of baking soda near the back corner of the fridge.  Replace every 30 days.
Tip #2:  Toss the Old
  • Before you put back all the food, veggies and condiments – check each item for spoilage, mold or items that have EXPIRED and TOSS!
  • If you are unsure if an item is safe to keep, follow the old adage “When in Doubt, Throw It Out!”
  • A great resource for food safety can be found at www.foodsafety.gov
Tip #3:  Organize Your Fridge
  • Upper Shelves - Place your ready-to-eat foods like milk, yogurt and bottled juices
  • Lower Drawers – Store your raw fruits and vegetables
  • Meat Drawer – So as to eliminate contamination, use a clear plastic bin in which to store any raw meat.  This will prevent spills and juices from reaching other areas of your fridge.  Make sure to clean this drawer often!
  • Fridge Door – This is the warmest part of your refrigerator and is designed for the storage of condiments.  DO NOT put eggs in this part of your fridge, instead store in the main part of the refrigerator to maintain a cool and consistent temperature.
 Tip #4:  Take Inventory
  • While placing food back in your fridge, be sure to make a list of those items that you will need to replenish, either because they have expired, you are completely out or there is little left.
  • Knowing the contents of your refrigerator will make it easier for you when completing grocery lists, eliminating the purchase of duplicate items thus lowering your grocery bill at checkout.
Tip #5:  No Time or Energy?  Do Yourself a Favor and Hire a Professional Organizer
  • Your time is valuable and with the hours of your days filled to the brim with more enjoyable activities, consider hiring a professional organizer to come to your home to help with some of these more tedious household tasks.
  • Home Life Concierge, Las Vegas Valley’s premier home management experts, has personal assistants available to tackle most home organization projects.  All of our personal assistants are highly trained and dedicated to giving clients help with and relief from life’s time-consuming errands, household tasks and projects.  Call us today at 702-964-9800 for a FREE consultation.
