Keep Your Pets Safe this Holiday Season!!

Keep Your Pets Safe this Holiday Season!!
Home Life Concierge and the ASPCA has an Important Reminder for all pet parents!

With the holiday season upon us, no doubt many pet parents plan to include their furry companions in the festivities, after all it’s about family, right?  In an effort to keep our pets safe, here are some important things to remember during the holiday season:

Be Careful with Seasonal Plants and Decorations

  • Christmas Trees: Be sure to anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree water—which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset—from spilling.
  • ·Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. Opt for artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.
  • Tinsel: Kitties love this sparkly "toy" that's easy to bat around and carry in their mouth. But if swallowed, it can possibly lead to an obstructed digestive tract, vomiting, dehydration, even surgery.
  • Candles: Don't leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock them over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface. And if you leave the room, put the candle out!
  • Wires, etc.…: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of pets reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet's mouth and digestive tract.

Avoid Holiday Food Dangers

  • Sweets: By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to which a determined pet will go to eat something tasty? Make sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans.
  • Leftovers: Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities in other fun ways that won't lead to costly medical bills.
  • Cocktails: If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets can’t get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.
  • Treats: Looking to stuff your pet's stockings? Stick with chew toys that are basically indestructible, Kongs that can be stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible. Long, stringy things are a feline's dream, but the most risky toys for cats involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the intestines, often necessitating surgery. Surprise your kitty with a new ball that's too big to swallow, or a stuffed catnip toy.

Americans Love their Holidays: But Hate the Hustle, Bustle and Hassle

Americans Love their Holidays: But Hate the Hustle, Bustle and Hassle
Thanksgiving and Christmas Day - two of the happiest days of the year according to Gallup’s U.S. Mood Index. Yet for those of us in charge of our family celebrations, these two days can gobble up every little bit of our holiday spirit.

Academic research shows that spending time with people we feel connected to over the holidays can increase our levels of serotonin, the happiness hormone.  However, the work we do in readying our homes for our seasonal celebrations can heighten our levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

Seems obvious considering the typical person spends 42 HOURS getting ready for the holidays!  And that’s on top of our everyday normal routines and work schedules!

A Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping survey broke it down even further.  We are spending…
  • 15 hours gift shopping
  • 3.5 hours standing in line
  • 1 hour returning items
  • 7.5 hours traveling
  • 20+ hours at holiday parties
Whew!  We didn’t even include the time decorating the house, putting up the tree or cooking.

Enjoy the Holidays with the Help of a Personal Assistant
For those of you wanting to lower your cortisol levels or those needing a bit more “Me Time” in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Christmas, give Home Life Concierge a jingle.  A personal assistant and lifestyle management company in Las Vegas, HLC can help you with all your holiday errands and shopping, leaving you time to cherish the season with the people you love.

Americans and their Smartphones: App Happy

By Janine Wile - November 18, 2015

Americans and their Smartphones: App Happy
Americans are consumed with their Smartphones.   We are no longer happy just calling, texting or emailing. We want our phones to do most everything and anything.  With over 1.6 million Android apps and more than 1.5 million iPhone apps (Statista data as of July 2015) our smartphones have become an indispensable component in our daily lives.  Who would have thought that we could be so connected to our phones and the apps that help network, manage, entertain, and keep us safe?

So, what’s on your phone?

Here are a few of our favorite apps...
The Techsperts at Home Life Concierge are pleased to share the following 4 apps (and yes, they’re Free) that you may or may not have heard about...
  1. WhatsApp – This is a great app if you have friends and family outside of the country, or if you are traveling abroad.  WhatsApp allows you to send and receive free text messages or photos, the only catch is your friends and family will have to install the app on their phone as well.
  2. Tripit – We like this app because it automatically connects to your email accounts, finds travel-confirmation emails, and turns them into well-organized itineraries.  You can access your itineraries anytime, on any device (even offline), plus get directions and maps for each destination.  You can also sync trip plans with your Google Calendar or Outlook, and add or edit plans manually.  And, if that’s not enough, you can even share some (or all) of your trip plans via email or social media.
  3. Evernote – We chose this app because it’s great for storing notes, ideas and anything you could possibly think of, like a grocery list, a receipt, an article or book you want to read, your to do list, or just a simple typed note. The app does a fantastic job keeping everything in sync between your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
  4. RetailMeNot - This app is great for those wanting to save money when shopping.  There are  hundreds of coupon codes to your favorite stores, a great selection of printable and local coupons, a decent amount of grocery coupons and a blog with tips on how to live a better, thriftier lifestyle.
Needing more information on how to load or use apps?   Call Home Life Concierge to schedule a Technology 101 service with one of our Techsperts.  Call 702-964-9800 for a FREE consultation.
